The Discrimination between "Zhi" and "Yan": A Case Study of the Calligraphic Styles of the Two Wangs

Abstract

Yu He first proposed the aesthetic concepts of "Zhi" (substantive simplicity) and "Yan" (refined elegance) in his Memorial on Calligraphy (Lun Shu Biao). By the early Tang dynasty, Sun Guoting had established these two concepts as core categories in calligraphic aesthetics and fundamental criteria for aesthetic judgment. This paper examines the calligraphy of the Two Wangs (Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi) through the lens of "Zhi" and "Yan," analyzing their differences from three perspectives: formal language, artistic conception, and stylistic quality. The analysis reveals that the aesthetic distinction between the Two Wangs' "Zhi" and "Yan" evolved continuously with historical development. This transformation represents not merely a shift in calligraphic style but a paradigm change in aesthetic standards.
