Construction of Landscape Dignity in Urban Renewal: A Case Study of the Cangxiang Street Historical and Cultural Block in Anyang City

Urban renewal is not only the reconstruction of physical space, but also the reconfiguration of cultural landscapes. At present, the renewal of some historical and cultural blocks has fallen into the dual predicament of “over-commercialization” and “museumification”, and the sense of “dignity” of block landscapes as carriers of residents’ lives and regional culture is gradually fading. Taking the Cangxiang Street Historical and Cultural Block in Anyang City, Henan Province as a case, this paper constructs a three-dimensional analytical framework of “cultural gene identification - material landscape restoration - cultural landscape activation” based on the Theory of Location-based Landscape Dignity and the Theory of Cultural Gene Activation, and systematically examines the construction path of landscape dignity in the renewal practice of Cangxiang Street. The study finds that the successful experience of Cangxiang Street shows that through the meticulous renovation of physical space, in-depth excavation and living inheritance of cultural genes, and the construction of a participation mechanism centered on original residents, it is possible to effectively connect history with the present and realize the effective renewal of the block. The trinity landscape dignity construction model of “material-culture-people” condensed in this paper can provide a theoretical reference for the sustainable renewal of historical and cultural blocks.
